PostHeaderIcon Album reviews: Touch and Go, by The Peacocks

IMG_1513

I don’t even know why I’m bothering to attempt to review this because if you’ve ever heard the Peacocks from Zurich you already know that they’re incapable of writing a bad record. They’re the only band I can think of that’s been around well over a decade (I think closer to two) and manage to make every album better than the last one. Honestly, I’m a little scared of new Peacocks records because it means I appreciate the former one a little less. See, the Peacocks are one of those bands you sort of grow up with. Their last LP, It’s Time For… is about growing past punk rock and all the bad things about it, but appreciating the outlet more than ever. “Older Than Punk” is the perfect jaded old schooler anthem. I will never forget their show in Chicago last year. It’s one of just a couple of times I’ve seen a band and sang along to every word to every song and was still disappointed that they left certain songs out of their set.

Touch and Go is a lot less poppy than It’s Time For…. It’s a little more like Angel, their second most recent LP, but it’s more crafted and a tad more angry. There’s a lot more of an American rockabilly edge to it, but they smoke most US rockabilly style bands. They can play so great, but they don’t ever overplay or wank, everything is right in place where it should be. You get the slow songs, the fast songs, the rock songs, the sarcastic lyrics, it’s all here. It’s like a phone call from an old friend.

I feel bad for future generations that will stumble upon this band in hindsight by downloading their MP3s on Soulseek or whatever people will be using at the time. They’ll probably love it, but they’ll have none of the excitement of anticipating the next release, wondering what their favorite band will come up with next, where they’ll go from here. They’ll never understand the joy of having this band grow with them, and that’s a shame. Long live the Peacocks.

This review pertains to the European version on I Used to F* People Like You In Prison Records. The vinyl version is only available through them and is limited to 500 copies on blue wax. There is an American CD version on Stomp Records that has a slightly different track listing (I HATE THAT BECAUSE I’LL HAVE TO BUY IT NOW!)

Stunning when massed in the garden.

Fall and Spring are best for directly sowing into the garden.

Most poppies are very easy to grow. They are a favorite of gardeners in every state for rock gardens, flower beds, containers, and most anyplace that you want color. Since poppies are self-sowing, if you allow them to go to seed you may only need to plant them once.

With so many stunning oriental hybrid poppies available today, anyone can indulge a passion for poppies by starting a collection or adding to an existing one.
I heartily recommend it. 200 count poppy seed pack.

Packets of seeds were individually wrapped with a picture of the flower and name on the front. They even sent an extra package of seeds at no charge. The company enclosed a personalized hand signed thank you card for placing the order. Informational instruction sheet for planting and care also included in shipment. Needless to say, I had a wonderful experience and will order with them again in the future. Now all I have to do is plant and wait. Thanks, wife of one who ordered

100 White Poppy Seeds Peshwar ‘Album’ Papaver Somniferum Reviews

Review by SimulacrumPants: 5 Papaver Somniferum

41JEBM43HDL. SL75 Papaver SomniferumI bought three different types of poppies from this vendor, and I think the service merits that I post the review for each purchase.

I ordered Danish Flag, Turkish Black, and Peshawar White seeds. I haven’t grown them yet, so I will come back to write reviews after I have. But so far, I have been pleased that:

1. The package arrived three days earlier than anticipated.

2. It came in a bubble-wrapped envelope, and each of the seed packets were labelled.

3. The order was hand-signed and personalized.

4. I received a bonus packet of seeds (Papaver Rhoeas.)

I literally got more than I expected; I would rate it six stars if I could.

Review by E. George: 5 Papaver Somniferum

41JEBM43HDL. SL75 Papaver SomniferumThis supplier obviously has gardening in their blood, as the package I received had been put together with great care and attention to detail. Love the little seed packets, and full instructions given.

I have been looking for Lauren’s Grape for some time now, although I did not know it’s name until now. I saw it growing in a garden I visited, and thought wow!! I have to have some of that. I had only got photographs to go on for comparison. Apparently Great Dixter has trialed it, and it had great reviews. Unable to get anyone to part with some seed here in the U.K. so I decided to go further afield.

Whilst searching I also found this lovely white specimen. Can’t wait to see what happens with these two specimens in 2010.

Will definately keep this seller in my favourites for future purchases.

Danish Flag Afghan Poppy 250 Seeds – Papaver somniferum Reviews

Review by J. Hanes: 5 Papaver Somniferum

51DqJ5WtzxL. SL75 Papaver SomniferumThe previous 1 star review is way off. He doesn’t know anything about poppies. The Danish Flag is the exact same species of poppy grown in Afghanistan and elsewhere. This is a variety of an Afghani cultivar of the papaver somniferum bred for it’s coloration. It’s only called Danish Flag because of the colors and cross. But if he’s ever seen a classic Afghan poppy he’d see the pattern is exactly the same, the red is just a lot redder in the Danish Flag variety.

The Danish Flag is easy to grow as long as it has decent soil, enough space, full sun, and fairly dry conditions around flowering. Plant in the late Fall or early Spring. At germination and lettuce stage they prefer a shorter 12 hour day, at flowering they prefer a 16 hr or longer daytime. Try to plant where you intend to grow, they hate transplanting, and it will stunt their growth. Can be grown in pots with varying results depending on the pot’s size. Keep them well drained. Plant by broadcasting in a soft flower bed, or tamp into soft soil, and thin the runts a couple weeks after sprouting. The seedlings are fairly resistant to frost and snow and thrive under cool conditions, the flowers and seed pods like bright sun and dry conditions.

Black Turkish Somniferum Poppy 200 Seeds – Papaver Reviews

Review by Grant Anderson: 5 Papaver Somniferum

31CQJINI0iL. SL75 Papaver SomniferumI purchased these along with the organic white somniferum and the gigantium. I’m close to a mile above sea level here in Utah with no growing experience with poppies. It will be interesting to see how they come along. I love gardening but generally like to grow only a single specimen of each thing which perks my curiosity. These can self polinate so I shold get viable seeds with only one plant. The poppy is a perinial so it will die at the end of it’s growth cycle. Also, the flowers only last a few days before they fall off. So it’s a lot of work for a small amount of gratification. I think it’s well worth it though.

I basically ignored the lengthy growing instructions that the company provided free. Well, I’ll say that I did read the entire thing but only slightly followed the instructions. For one, I didn’t plant the seeds, but instead sprinkled them on top of the soil as suggested. I used very small pots with regular soil (not exactly recommended) which was a bad idea because the soil would dry out very quickly and then I’d douse them with water and then they’d be too wet and wouldn’t drain well. After about two or three weeks I had no results at all. I wasn’t surprised. I dug through the soil and couldn’t find any trace of the seeds. They are afterall, extremely small. Since I had only planeted about 10 seeds, I had plenty left over. I wasn’t too worried. This was just an experiment to see if I could get them to germinate indoors. From what I’ve read, they do not like to germinate indoors at all. I decided that I would wait until the frost was gone and then follow the instructions properly and plant them outdoors. Youtube has several good videos on planting poppy outdoors.

I assumed that the seeds had died because I had oversoaked them and they had literally rotted before germination. I took the small pots and dumped the entire contents into a large pot which has my prized jalapeno plant which is sitting by the window. It was in need of some extra soil anyway. I smeared the soild evenly and then gave the plant a nice big watering that it was due. Much to my surprise, about a week later all the poppy seeds have sprouted. I transfered some of these little seedlings to their own pots. I’m still getting new sprouts popping up. Some of them haven’t survived transplanting but from what I understand, you should expect some of them to fail anyway. Since you’re planting several seeds in one spot, you’ll get several sprouts. Let them grow and then remove the smaller weaker ones. My plants are receiving natural sunlight at a window facing south. If you’re attempting to germinate indoors you might consider my experience. They appear to like natural light with a low to medium moisture level that you get from a larger pot which drains well but retains the water evenly. The soil I used is ordinary bagged house plant soil from wallyworld. Scott Company Brand I believe.

I sent a friendly e-mail to the company who sells these seeds with several questions regarding the poppy plant. They responded quickly with a lengthy list of useful recommendations and ideas. These are really nice people who care about the product they sell and are well informed. A small business with a big heart. I highly recommend these seeds and the company. They combine shipping automatically so you don’t get stuck with huge shipping fees. I will order again in future!

31CQJINI0iL. SL75 Papaver SomniferumWell I planted these while still cold like everyone says, They did come up when it warmed up but after a week they just all died. i took what I had left and started indoor and they grew fine for about a week and then all died again. Im not sure if it was the seed that was the issue or something I did but I must say it turned out to be a waste of money because i have nothing to show for planting 200 seeds!

PostHeaderIcon Flowers that go with our Roses

The Barber Garden: Poppies

There are many flowers that go with our roses. To start with the dwarfs, for spring we can have Snowdrops, Muscari or Grape Hyacinths, winter Aconite, small Narcissus, and Scilla, or the dainty blue and white Chionodoxa. All do well underneath the branches of the rose trees.

Flowers such as Forget-me-nots, spring Anemones, young Wallflowers, Aubrietia, and Violets can be used for planting between the trees. Make sure the Violets and Wallflowers are taken up as soon as they have finished flowering, as they tend to tangle with the roots of the roses. Don’t throw them away, separate them or cuttings may be taken. Put out in a shaded place until autumn comes round, then return them to their beds.

Summer friends

More subdued colors must be used for summer. The brown Wood-Sorrel, Oxalis, which is only about two inches high, looks very pretty. The leaves are shaped like a shamrock, but a rich brown, and it displays tiny yellow flowers which only come out when the sun shines on them. It is brought up from seed, and if it is sown one spring there will be no further trouble, as it comes up every year. Don’t allow it to get too big, or reach too close to the stems of the roses.

There are a few lowly Campanulas also suited for carpets. If the soft shades are used, Violas and Pansies look happy amongst the roses. They like the same soil, and both, particularly Pansies, do not like a blaze of sun, and for that reason will do very well with the roses.

Saxifrages make a nice carpet, and are great for edgings. S.Caespitosa, S.Hypnoides, and others of the mossy tribe, are very lovely if not allowed to grow too thick. Thrift is another good edging for rose beds. Where the beds or borders abut on a gravel path edging is needed and turf makes the best frame of all.

Annuals

Annuals Shirley and Iceland Poppies, Leptosiphon, Whitlavia, and Godetia are good plants for associating with roses. Care must be taken to see that the color of the annual blends in with that of the roses. The Poppies, shades of yellow and orange, should only be planted amongst cream roses or yellow roses, and the Leptosiphon, being rose pink, only amongst white roses, or those of a similar shade of pink.

Round the standards

The taller Salpiglossis look stunning grouped around the stem of a rose, and are such stylish annuals that they enhance the beauty of flowers overhead.

Coreopsis Tinctoria, which has yellow flowers with brown centers is also very good for this purpose. The Salpiglossis give blooms of several shades if a mixed packet of seed is sown, purple, tawny, terracotta, and many other standard shades. It is a very good idea to buy the seedlings when a few inches high and the outcome is more certain.

Japanese Pinks are pretty, and so easy to grow. Their fringed crimson and white flowers can be cut in quantities without detracting from the appearance of the rose beds, and they keep on blooming right up to the frosts. Statices are much used rather than grasses, their endless tiny flowers are so light and airy, and are produced very abundantly. They grow from eighteen inches to two feet high, and take away from the bare effect of the rose stems very well indeed. Celosias, too, are feathery annuals to be had in different colors. The golden colored variety is the most distinct and has a good effect grouped round some cream standard roses.

These annuals should be treated as half hard. If an early show is desired, frames must be brought into use or the young plants can be bought.

Plants with a greater quantity of foliage and deeper roots can be used, when rose trees are far apart. Columbines are well adapted for grouping with roses, especially when these are growing in shady places. They do not flower for such lengthy periods as the annuals, but their leaves are very fresh, and plants which flower later can be mixed with them.

PostHeaderIcon Gardening: What is an annual?

The Barbers' Garden: Poppies

In the language of the flower gardening world, the words annual and perennial may as well been Greek or Spanish to me. I simply turned the dirt in my flower beds in mid winter and headed to the garden center in early spring to purchase more flowers. The color was the only thing I concentrated on. One year, I was behind in my gardening chores and noticed little plants emerging from the unturned soil. Alas! This began my education into the annual and perennial lingo of the more experienced gardeners of the world.

Annuals are plants that sprout, flower, seed and die all within one season or one year. Perennials return year after year. Then there are biennials that act similar to annuals. They sprout one year, and bloom the second year, if beginner gardeners like me don’t kill them turning the soil in mid winter. Most annuals are not winter hardy depending on your area and climate. The first frost will kill them. Also, the last surprise frost or freeze in the early spring will kill them. They should be planted in the spring when the soil is warm and all chances of late frost or freeze has long passed. There are exceptions, as always in the garden world.

There are warm-weather annuals and cool-weather annuals. Warm weather annuals are flowers, like impatiens or germaniums, that should be planted when soil is warm. They will die when the cold touches them. Then there are the cool-weather annuals like poppies and pansies that need to be planted in the fall for early spring growth and bloom. They will die as soon as the heat of summer touches them.

Annuals are popular to plant in the spring to fill in the bare spots left by early blooming perennials or bulbs, that have bloomed and died back. There are vast varieties available. Garden centers, grocery stores and local markets normally carry the most popular variety, but nurseries and seed catalogs will have hundreds of choices to pick from. The warm weather varieties can be started indoors from seed to get a jump start on the flowering.

Annuals are easy to grow and will provide blooms from spring to fall, but they require a little more work since you have to repurchase and replant every year. As they are short lived, it is also fun to experiment with different varieties yearly to find your perfect flower. Annuals are the perfect patio plant as they perform well in containers or pots on your deck, patio or porch.

Cool-weather annuals:

*Ornamental cabbage

*Poppies

*Sweet William

*Sweet Pea

*Pansies

*Larkspur

Some annuals for sunny areas:

*Calliopsis

*Cosmos

*Germanium

*Zinnia

*Black-eyed Susan, and can be biennials in some areas

*Four O’clock

*Marigold

*Morning Glory and Moonflower

*Sunflower

Some annuals for shady areas:

*Impatiens

*Caladiums

*Begonias

While I enjoy perennials, biennials and annuals, annuals are the easiest to provide long lasting flower throughout the spring and summer. Once established in the early spring, they will reward you with color until the first frost of autumn.

Many of us flip through garden magazines, all the while thinking that it takes years, a professional, or tons of money to landscape the gardens featured in the glossy pictures. This isnt necessarily true. You can design a breathtaking garden and be the envy of the neighborhood by following some of the following tips.

Know What You Like and What Works
Drive around your neighborhood and see whats out there that grows well in your zone. You can jot down what you see on index cards, so they are organized and handy. Start gathering page clippings from magazines and collect some pictures of the designs that interest you. This can help you decide what garden style you like. Youll have an easy reference for plants and placement too.

Select Location and Color
Next, look at your notes and clippings and choose the color scheme youd like to have in your garden. Don’t forget to keep in mind if youre designing and planting in shade, sun, or partial shade or partial sun. Are you looking for something bright and vibrant or something more calming and soothing?

Consider starting with a foundation of shrubs and accenting with some perennials, bulbs, ornamental grasses, and annuals for more seasonal color. Perhaps, you want all flowers. Decide on a shape that compliments your house style. Straight styles give a more formal appearance while curves give a more informal feel. If you dont feel confident selecting colors, you can use a color wheel to help pick contrasting and complimenting colors.

Budget and Create a Plan
Decide how much you are able to and want to spend on your new garden. Do you want to start with a foundation and add to it gradually? If so, start with purchasing your most expensive plants and shrubs first. Use these as a focal point for your garden. Start watching for sales and discount plants at garden centers and nurseries. Tell everyone you know that youre starting a garden and would love it if they could give you divisions of their perennials or seeds they have saved from their garden. Let family and friends know that you have a wish list of plants that would be the perfect gift idea. If you have access online, do a search for seed swaps.

Many gardeners love to help a new gardener. Many are willing to send seeds for the cost of postage or will trade for something else that you may have that they are looking for. A great resource for free items is freecycle.org Look for a group in your area, join the group, and post letting the group know that you would be interested in garden plants and seeds. You may get lucky and find that a member of the group has already offered some plants up for grabs. Dont forget to ask your local garden club when they are having their sales too. You can also start some plants from seed yourself. Many seeds are very easy to direct sow and a little can go a long way.

Heres a partial list of easy to grow seeds:

Candytuft
Asters
4 oclocks
Sunflowers
Pansies
Violas
Impatiens
Dianthus
Larkspur
Salvia
Cupid’s Dart
Morning Glories
Moonflowers
Zinnias
Calendula
Marigold
Cosmos
Sweet Alyssum
Bee Balm
Poppies
Nasturtium

Dont forget if you decide to sow into containers, there are many inexpensive containers such as yogurt containers, milk jugs, egg cartons, and plastic ice cream buckets. You can also call your city and see if they have free mulch available. Dont hesitate to strike up conversations with your neighbors while youre out for a walk. You never know, the topic of gardening may come up and they might be more than happy to offer you some seeds or divisions.

Design Away
Now youre ready to design. You can sketch out your idea beforehand. Keep the following in mind as you design.

Scale- Judge the size of the area and choose plants that arent going to be too large, too wide, or too small for the area. Keep in mind the plants size when its met its mature growth.

Balance-Dont place your plants where one area is too compacted with plants and another area is too airy. Try and achieve a good balance of small, medium, and large plants. Balance offers visual stability. It can be created with space between plantings or the visual weight of your design. This can be created with lines so that your garden is pleasing to look at from all angles.

Focal Point- Your focal point will be the area that your eye is drawn to first. This can be your prized flowers, tree, or shrub.

Rhythm- This is visual flow. The eye wanders throughout the entire garden design, but comes back to the focal point. It can be achieved with repetition and contrast.

Harmony-Unity- This is when plants have a way of appearing connected and a part of one another. This can be achieved with color, texture, groupings. Unity is lost when your plants look too separate or your color choice makes one plant look lost amongst the rest.

Color- Color impacts the entire design process. Use a color wheel if you dont feel confident selecting colors that go well together.

If all of this is too confusing and overwhelming, check out some garden catalogs. Many have suggested designs. Its also best to place your containers out and arrange and rearrange where you want to plant them before you start digging.

Accessorize (homemade garden art)
To add some interest and whimsy to your garden, consider some homemade items or trash to treasure works of art. Ideas such as making your own stepping stones, garden markers, terra cotta bird baths or toad houses, painted rocks and pavers, and fun wind chimes are simple projects that can add a lot of interest to your garden area. Look around for unique items you could add to your garden such as milk cans, wooden chairs, ladders, tricycles, wagons, trunks, roofing shingles, mailboxes, or even dressers. The sky is the limit on what you can create. Use your imagination.

There you have it and you didnt have to hire a pro, spend thousands of dollars, or take years to achieve a pretty garden. You wont be a new gardener for long. Soon, it will be you sharing starts, cuttings, seeds, divisions, and tips.

PostHeaderIcon Growing Perennials

Laurens Grape Poppy

Perennials, by definition, are plants that live for three or more years. This would stretch from dandelions to redwoods and many species in between. When refers to perennials, they are talking about flowering garden plants with herbaceous stems. These plants die down to the soil’s surface in winters while the root remains alive and ready to send fresh growth in the spring. The durability of the roots sets them apart. They come back unprompted year after year and set the garden ablaze with color from April to November. Perennials flower abundantly and multiply without being coaxed. They are easy to grow and tolerate considerable neglect. Perennials include delphiniums, columbines, daisies and peonies.

Annuals sprout from seed, bear fruit, seeds and flowers and die – all in a single year.
Biennials spend their first years growing, produce flowers and seeds in the second year- and then die. Sweet William, foxglove, Canterbury bell and wallflower are some of the common biennials.

Flowering perennials are noticeably long lived. The first recorded appearance of peonies dates back to 1864. Delphiniums thrive for seven to eight years where summers and winters are moderate. Day lilies, coreopsis, acanthus, lavender cotton and false indigo grow beautifully in a warm and humid climate. The dry and windy places do not lack for perennials. Oriental poppies, garden phlox, bearded irises, day lilies, chrysanthemum and many others flourish there.

The first challenge while growing perennials is to obtain continuity of color by planting various varieties to flower at different times. The aim is to present a charming array of color from early spring to late fall. However, a rare perennial flowers all of the growing season.
Another problem is to keep the assorted perennials from overgrowing one another in the beds and creating a mess. Some perennials like chrysanthemums spread so fast that they require drastic control methods like annual digging up and division of the roots. Others never outgrow their allotted space. Therefore, the planting has to be planned well in advance taking the characteristics of the various plants into consideration.

The third challenge while growing perennials is to obtain maximum results with minimum work. Good perennial gardens require plenty of air circulation. Stagnant air encourages plant diseases especially in humid places. They require abundant sunshine. Day lilies, columbine and leopards bane will tolerate shade whereas some like Japanese anemone, plantain lilies, yellow corydalis, western bleeding heart and Siberian bugloss will thrive in it. However, the majority will sprout spindly stems with few flowers without ample sun.

Finally, good perennial gardens require well-prepared soil. The soil should be moisture retentive as well as well drained. It should be rich enough to sustain the plants for many years and should be loose enough to permit air and water to reach the roots.
Not all gardens have all the characteristics. Given the air circulation and the sunshine, the rest can be prepared. Once the garden area has been finalized, you can move onto planning the type and location of the various plants.

There are many books that can lure your children into gardening. Starting with “The Secret Garden”. After reading this book, you can carve out a place in your yard, no matter how small, to create a garden that is sure to be an escape for your child. A forgotten place behind the garage, in between two bushes, or that corner behind the tree and next to the fence. No matter if its shady and dark. The more hidden and secluded, the better. There are many wonderful and even colorful plants that thrive in shade. Collect flat stones to make a small path and find an old chair to poke somewhere and rest.

Another fun garden to create is a fairy garden. The wonderful new series of books featuring Disney’s Tinkerbell shows many ways the fairies use all kinds of different plants for everything from clothes to rugs to blankets. Finding different plants and flowers that might appeal to the fairies is important. Choose toadstools or elephant ears for the shelter they can give, and for food, be sure to include herbs or berries or sunflowers for the seeds. Fairies might also appreciate a small trickle of water from a fountain and some stones to rest on after a long flight. The aquarium section at the pet store has some really neat stone formations that can serve as little homes or a sort of gathering place for fairy parties!

A really easy flower to grow is the poppy, and starts from a seed very easily. If you have lots of room, you can plant your own “field of poppies” just like those from “The Wizard of Oz”. Some poppy plants seem to grow as high as two feet and for little ones they are a real treat to run through, just like Dorothy.

Finally, you can make a wonderful flower garden inspired by “Alice in Wonderland”. In the animated movie, Alice makes a daisy chain quite early on. Daisy mums are easy plants to grow and bloom very quickly. These flowers are also fun for children because they produce multiple blooms and children love picking flowers. Later in the movie, Alice shrinks and encounters many different flowers such as the rose, the iris, the “shy” violet and the lily. Creating an “Alice in Wonderland” garden is very fun and also provides the perfect spot to have your very own “Mad Hatter” tea party later on. Enjoy your summer with your kids!
